Summary

Marion Middle serves 401 students in grades 6–8 in Marion, Virginia, as part of Smyth County Public Schools, a district ranked in the top 17 percent of Virginia school divisions. The school has earned a 2-star rating from the state for six consecutive years, with an overall ranking in the 37th percentile of Virginia middle schools. That represents a step back from before the pandemic, when Marion consistently earned 3 stars and ranked near the 50th percentile.

The school's most pressing challenges stand out clearly when compared with nearby schools. Chronic absenteeism reached 24.8 percent in 2024–25, nearly double the state average, while Rural Retreat Middle posted just 5.7 percent. Eighth grade math proficiency has fallen to 23.5 percent, far below the state average of 46.9 percent and dramatically behind Chilhowie Middle (71.7 percent), Glade Spring Middle (70.2 percent), and Rural Retreat Middle (66.7 percent). Reading scores also trail every nearby school in most grade levels. These gaps are not easily explained by poverty or resources — Chilhowie Middle serves a similar high-poverty population yet outperforms Marion in every tested subject while spending less per student.

There are bright spots. Eighth graders in Algebra I posted 100 percent proficiency, and 7th grade Civics scores came in well above the state average. The school also earns 3 stars for its disabled student subgroup, ranking in the 63rd percentile statewide. Attendance was much better just a few years ago, which suggests improvement is achievable. With comparable or better staffing ratios than neighboring schools, the opportunity at Marion Middle appears to lie in strengthening attendance, sharpening 8th grade math instruction, and replicating the approaches that are working for students in advanced coursework and special education.
