Smyth County Public Schools serves roughly 4,132 students across 14 schools in rural southwest Virginia, including 8 elementary schools, 3 middle schools, and 3 high schools, and the district itself is a strong performer ranked 17th out of 131 Virginia divisions with a 4-star rating. Saltville Elementary is the standout elementary school, ranking 37th in Virginia with perfect 100% proficiency in 5th grade math and 4th grade reading, while Northwood High ranks 11th among Virginia high schools with a 98.3% graduation rate and strong Algebra I and Biology scores.

Chilhowie High also earns 5 stars with the district's highest graduation rate at 98.9%, while Chilhowie Middle is the clear best middle school, beating state averages in 6th and 8th grade math and posting 100% proficiency in Algebra I. The high schools are a major district strength, with all three graduating over 98% of students and dropout rates below 1.6%. However, middle school grade-level math is a weak spot: Marion Middle posted just 23.53% proficiency in 8th grade math, and Northwood Middle had an alarming 8.57% in 7th grade math the prior year, even as accelerated Algebra I students scored perfectly.
