Summary

Triangle Elementary is a PK-5 school in Triangle, VA, serving 795 students as part of Prince William County Public Schools. The school currently ranks in the 21st percentile of Virginia elementary schools (881st out of 1,111), a 1-star rating that places it well below the district's overall 3-star standing. Academic performance trails both district and state averages in every subject. In 2025-26, math proficiency fell from 70% in 3rd grade to just 52% in 5th grade, while reading proficiency hovered in the low 60s across all grades — roughly 10-15 points below the district average. Science proficiency was 55%, compared to 72% districtwide.

What makes these results particularly notable is how Triangle compares to nearby schools serving similar populations. About 71% of Triangle students qualify for free/reduced-price lunch, nearly identical to John F. Pattie Senior Elementary (74.4%), Covington-Harper Elementary (70.2%), and Swans Creek Elementary (70.9%). Yet those schools rank at the 91st, 64th, and 40th percentiles, respectively. The contrast with John F. Pattie Senior Elementary is especially striking: Pattie has larger classes and spends less per student ($8,568 vs. $11,726), yet achieves math and reading proficiency scores mostly in the 80s and 90s. Triangle, despite more resources and a lower student-teacher ratio of 14.0, remains in the bottom quarter of the state. Only Dumfries Elementary (18th percentile) ranks lower locally.

There are some encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 29.4% to 16.4% over two years, 3rd grade math proficiency jumped from 50% to 70%, and VA Studies scores improved dramatically from 48% to 67.5%. However, 5th grade math has declined from 65% to 52%, and significant achievement gaps remain: male students rank at the 12th percentile, English Language Learners at the 19th, and white students at the 17th. The school's relative bright spot is African American students, who rank at the 51st percentile. For parents, the picture is clear: Triangle faces real challenges, but attendance is improving and early-grade gains suggest a foundation to build on, particularly if upper-grade math instruction becomes a focus.
