The school has long been a strong performer, ranking in the 95th and 97th percentiles in 2018–19 and 2020–21. However, its trajectory has shifted: Poquoson Elementary fell from the 76th percentile in 2023–24 to the 68th in 2024–25, and now sits at the 54th percentile with a 3-star rating in 2025–26.

The most striking drop is in 5th grade. In 2025–26, 5th-grade math proficiency was 70.1% (state: 72.4%), and 5th-grade science was 64.4% (state: 68.8%)—both the lowest among nearby schools with reported data. Machen Elementary sit closer to Poquoson’s current level.
