Summary

Hardin Reynolds Memorial School is a small middle school in Critz, VA, serving 203 students in grades 4 through 7 as part of the highly rated Patrick County Public Schools district. Despite serving an overwhelmingly economically disadvantaged population—with nearly 99% of students eligible for free or reduced lunch—the school has built a reputation for strong attendance and competitive academics. Its chronic absenteeism rate sits at just 9.5%, well below the state average of 14.8% and far better than nearby Martinsville Middle (12.0%) or Fieldale-Collinsville Middle (21.6%).

Academically, HRMS outpaces its regional peers in most areas. In 7th-grade math, the school posted a 73.33% proficiency rate, far exceeding the state average of 51.11% and both nearby middle schools. Reading scores also shine: 6th-grade reading hit 78.72% proficiency and 7th-grade reading reached 71.11%, beating both comparison schools in each case. Students from low-socioeconomic backgrounds—who make up nearly the entire student body—ranked in the 74th percentile statewide in 2025–26, a strong indicator of the school's effectiveness with its highest-need students. The school's district advantage is notable too: Patrick County Public Schools ranks 10th of 131 districts in Virginia with a 5-star rating, while Henry County ranks 91st and Martinsville City ranks 124th.

That said, the latest year has brought challenges. HRMS's state ranking slipped to 192nd of 416 middle schools (54th percentile), down sharply from 83rd the prior year. Fifth grade has emerged as a weak point, with math (59.26%), reading (68.52%), and science (61.11%) all falling below district and state averages. Sixth-grade math also dipped below the state average. The school's long-term trajectory remains encouraging—it climbed from near the bottom of Virginia's rankings in 2015–16 to the top 15% just a few years ago—but stabilizing the middle grades and recovering from the 2025–26 setback will be key to maintaining that progress.
