Fieldale-Collinsville Middle is a grades 6–8 middle school in Collinsville, VA, serving 792 students as part of Henry County Public Schools, in a high-poverty community where nearly all students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

The school's overall state ranking has slipped over recent years, moving from the 50th percentile in 2020–21 to the 27th percentile in 2025–26 with a 1-star rating. However, these overall numbers hide some real bright spots. English Learner students rank in the top 8% statewide (92nd percentile), and Algebra I performance is exceptional with 97–100% proficiency over the past three years. The school also outperforms its nearby neighbor, Laurel Park Middle, in 7th-grade math (54.8% vs 40.9%), 8th-grade science (57.0% vs 47.3%), and 7th-grade civics (73.6% vs 64.4%). On the other hand, standard 8th-grade math proficiency has collapsed from 55.5% in 2023–24 to just 28.5% in 2025–26, far below the state average of 46.9%. Reading also trails the state at every grade level, with 6th, 7th, and 8th grade proficiency between 61% and 67% compared to roughly 73% statewide.

The school faces meaningful challenges. Chronic absenteeism affects about 22% of students, well above the state rate of 14.8%, though it has improved from 28% two years ago. The student-teacher ratio jumped sharply from 12.1 to 17.3 in a single year, adding pressure on classroom instruction. Nearby Hardin Reynolds Memorial School, which serves a similarly high-poverty population, has much lower chronic absenteeism (9.5%) and outperforms Fieldale-Collinsville Middle in 7th-grade math by about 19 percentage points. Meanwhile, Martinsville Middle has lower chronic absenteeism and higher per-student spending but ranks slightly lower overall, showing that outcomes depend on many factors. Despite these challenges, the school's exceptional ELL results show that strong academic outcomes are possible in this high-need setting.

Best school ever! They have a wonderful staff and offer many programs to help the students to learn. They will have remediation and advanced classes. Anything your child needs they are there to help. They ensure the safety of their students and continue to keep the school clean and also allow the students to have fun.

(Also their band program is the best school in the state in my opinion, except for Bassett High School.) Close Quote
