Summary

Kenbridge Elementary is a small, rural PK-5 school in Kenbridge, Virginia, serving 372 students within Lunenburg County Public Schools. The school currently sits at the 36th percentile statewide — a modest step back from the mid-40s percentile rankings of the previous two years — and serves a very high-poverty population, with 93.8% of students eligible for free/reduced lunch. Per-student spending of $12,334 is the highest among all nearby comparison schools.

Despite the challenges that come with high poverty, Kenbridge has clear strengths. Its chronic absenteeism rate of 10.0% is well below the state average of 14.8% and half the rate of nearby Victoria Elementary (17.0%). The school is especially effective with English learner students, who rank at the 81st percentile statewide, and both African American students (60th percentile) and economically disadvantaged students (59th percentile) perform above the state median in subgroup rankings. Academically, 4th grade is a standout year: reading proficiency reached 78.2%, beating the state's 73.7%, and 4th grade Virginia Studies scores in 2024-2025 (80.4%) far outpaced both the district (61.2%) and state (68.2%).

The challenges, however, are significant. Third grade reading proficiency fell from 68.3% to 55.4% in one year, well below the district (68.6%) and state (67.6%). Fifth grade science has also trailed the state for three straight years (55.1% vs. 68.8% statewide). And while Kenbridge spends more per student than any nearby school, that investment does not always translate into superior results: Crewe Primary, about 14 miles away with similar poverty levels, ranks at the 67th percentile and outperformed Kenbridge in every shared tested subject while spending roughly $5,000 less per student. Kenbridge does outperform Red Oak-Sturgeon Elementary, Blackstone Primary, and Totaro Elementary, but lags Crewe Primary, Victoria Elementary, and South Hill Elementary in several areas. Strong attendance and impressive subgroup results provide a solid foundation; improving early reading and science instruction would make the biggest difference.
