Summary

John Champe High is a large public school in Aldie, VA, serving 1,851 students in grades 9-12 as part of Loudoun County Public Schools, a district ranked in the top 15% of Virginia school divisions. The school has earned a 5-star rating and currently ranks 15th out of 331 Virginia high schools, a remarkable jump from its #64 ranking just two years ago. Among nearby schools, only Freedom High, Independence High, and Lightridge High rank higher, while Briar Woods High and Broad Run High trail behind.

Academically, John Champe is exceptional, with a 99.5% graduation rate and a 0.2% dropout rate, far outpacing state averages. Students consistently score above district and state levels on SOL tests, particularly in 9th-grade Geometry (98.8% proficiency) and Biology (98.4%). What truly sets the school apart, however, is its success across all student groups. English Language Learners, military-connected students, African American students, Hispanic students, and female students all rank in the top 20 schools statewide for their respective subgroups, an achievement few schools can match. This success is especially notable given that 22.5% of students qualify for free/reduced lunch, a higher rate than nearby top performers like Lightridge High (10.3%) or Independence High (10.6%).

The main area for improvement is chronic absenteeism, which sits at 17.3%—higher than the district average of 14.1% and above most neighboring high schools, including Briar Woods High (15.1%) and Broad Run High (16.4%). Despite this challenge, the school maintains outstanding outcomes. With per-student spending of $17,411 and a 13.4:1 student-teacher ratio, John Champe achieves exceptional results efficiently. Overall, this is a high-performing, equity-minded school delivering excellent education for a diverse student body, with room to grow if attendance improves.

Open Quote At first I thought this was a good school until I realized that some of the teachers don't really care about the students education. I had some concerns about how this teacher was grading the test and work she gives out. When I told the teacher what my concerns about some the papers she had graded she explained that on the papers she graded what she felt was important and not all the questions on the paper and I told her that was not fair to the student for her not to grade all the questions on the test and the teacher said that she doesn't grade every piece of work or question that students turn in and that's when I said that is a really big concern for me because how can determine what areas a student has a problem in if your not grading everything and that's when she said that she has been a teacher for 17 years and no teacher grades everything that would take to much time if every teacher graded everything. So when I finished talking to her I call back up to the school to talk to the guidance counselor at 8:15 am I was told she was in a meeting and she didn't call me back until 3:00pm that day and she informed me that she had already spoken to the teacher and that since she was an insider she understood what the teacher was saying from and since I was an outsider that I didn't understand, that the teacher had been teaching for a long time and that's how all the teachers in that department grades. So when I called the next morning at 9:30 am to speak to the school principal I was told he was not in his office so I left my cell and my home number and that I was calling about my student and he didn't even care enough to call me back. So if you have any students that go to this school please go over their work with them to make sure everything is graded like it should so you can ensure that your child is getting the best education that they deserve.
