Summary

Terraset Elementary is a mid-sized public school in Reston, Virginia, serving 598 students in grades PK–6 as part of Fairfax County Public Schools. In the 2025–2026 school year, Terraset ranks at the 55th percentile statewide with a 3-star rating — a solid, middle-of-the-pack performance that places it roughly at the median of the elementary schools in its immediate area. Nearby schools illustrate a wide range: Sunrise Valley Elementary, Fox Mill Elementary, and Crossfield Elementary all rank in the high 80s or 90s statewide, while Herndon Elementary and Dogwood Elementary sit near the very bottom, and Lake Anne Elementary and Forest Edge Elementary fall below Terraset.

One of the clearest bright spots is attendance. Chronic absenteeism at Terraset has fallen dramatically from 18.4% in 2022–2023 to just 8.8% in 2024–2025 — now better than both the district and state averages, and among the lowest in the local school group. The school also serves a moderately diverse and economically mixed community, with 34.1% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. Academic results vary by student group: students with disabilities perform notably well at the 90th percentile statewide, while economically disadvantaged students rank in the bottom fifth — indicating a meaningful equity gap that the school has not yet closed. Performance for Hispanic students also trails the school's overall average.

Test scores show a pattern of early-grade challenges and upper-grade strengths. Third-grade math has consistently lagged the district, while fourth-grade reading (84.8% proficiency), fifth-grade science (74.0%), and some sixth-grade reading cohorts have matched or exceeded district averages. With strong attendance, solid science instruction, and clear momentum in supporting students with disabilities, Terraset's main opportunities lie in early-grade math and literacy intervention and in closing achievement gaps for Hispanic and low-income students. It is a stable, improving school — not in the top tier of Reston schools, but a dependable choice in a highly varied local landscape.

Open Quote Terraset is one of the best kept secrets in Fairfax County! It is a fantastic school with a strong focus on both academics and character education. The principal and assistant principal set a wonderful tone -- children from all backgrounds are welcome. Administration says what they mean -- they promise to meet each child where they are, and they do. They are proactive in obtaining extra resources for kids who need extra help and supports. The IEP process has been smooth and the staff very accommodating. Lots of very experienced, first rate teachers, though I wish the classes were smaller (up to 28/class). Close Quote

Open Quote Involved principal and teachers. PTA is very supportive and involved. Kids seem to have fun and to be excited to go to school. My first grader is always happy at the end of the day and shares fun things he has learned, even though he claims to "hate" school. The school has a very welcoming environment and is very academically supportive. Close Quote
