Summary

Herndon Elementary is a PK-6 school in Herndon, Virginia, serving 792 students as part of Fairfax County Public Schools, one of Virginia's highest-rated districts, though the school itself ranked in the bottom 1% of Virginia elementary schools for 2025-26. About 74% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch, and the school has consistently ranked in the bottom 1-6% of Virginia elementary schools over the past decade.

Academic proficiency at Herndon is well below district and state averages. Across all SOL tests, the school averages roughly 36% proficiency compared with about 75% for the district and 71% statewide. In 5th grade math, only 12.1% of students were proficient versus 66.6% in the district, and 3rd grade reading proficiency was 36.6% versus 72.5% district-wide. Nearby schools show that strong outcomes are possible in the same area: Aldrin Elementary ranks in the 83rd percentile and Armstrong Elementary in the 65th, while Dranesville Elementary, just 1.5 miles away, scored 80.3% proficient in 3rd grade math compared with Herndon's 42.6%. Herndon's performance is more similar to nearby high-poverty schools like Hutchison Elementary, Dogwood Elementary, and Sully Elementary, even though Herndon's poverty rate is notably lower than some of those schools.

There are some encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has fallen from 24.5% in 2021-22 to 12.3% in 2024-25, now below the Virginia state average of 14.8%. The school spends $14,282 per student, on par with Dranesville, though its 15.3 student-teacher ratio is higher than most neighboring schools. English Learner and low-income students are the lowest-performing subgroups, suggesting that targeted support in those areas may be the most urgent lever for improvement. The recent attendance gains have not yet translated into higher test scores, but sustained improvement could eventually support academic turnaround.

Open Quote This poor school has gone from bad to worse. Our kids have been there for five years and each year has been a new low. The town is wonderful. This school is a failure. It used to have a French Immersion program which attracted bright students. But the demographics changed and now they have a Spanish program because the majority of students don't speak English. The students come from very poor families and it is now Title I.
Most parents HATE the principal. There have been parents accusing her publicly of lying and deceiving the parents. There has been an exodus of the bright, capable students because of it.
It's too bad. It used to be a nice school but now people can't even sell their house if it is close to the school because it is one of the lowest schools in the STATE. There are some really involved parents who live at the school but they aren't making much progress. It is the same with the teachers. There are a few good ones but the best teachers left with the best students.
The school is also over crowded. Kids are stuffed in trailers by the playground. It's old and needs renovations, too. Close Quote
