Summary:

Wise County Public Schools serves approximately 5,779 students across 11 schools in Virginia's far southwest: five elementary schools, three middle schools, and three high schools, with two PK-8 schools bridging the elementary and middle levels. Despite a high-poverty population where roughly 85-93% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, the district ranks #2 out of 131 Virginia districts (98th percentile) and graduates 98.3% of its students, far above the state average of 92.3%. The district's middle schools are a particular strength, with L.F. Addington Middle, Coeburn Middle, and Union Middle all ranking in the top 8% of Virginia middle schools.

St. Paul Elementary is the district's crown jewel, ranking #2 among 1,111 Virginia elementary schools with 100% proficiency in multiple subjects, including 3rd and 4th grade math and reading, 8th grade math and science. Central High ranks #4 among Virginia high schools with a 99.4% graduation rate and 100% proficiency in Algebra II—and it achieves this with the lowest per-student spending among the district's high schools. Coeburn Primary has surged from #174 to #15 in three years, while Coeburn Middle jumped to #11 statewide. Every school serving 8th graders reports 100% proficiency in Algebra I, indicating a well-aligned advanced math pathway.

The most notable concerns are concentrated at a few schools. Eastside High has the district's lowest graduation rate (96.8%) and weakest social studies scores, with roughly 54% proficiency in Geography and VA/US History. Union Primary and Union Middle both exceed 20% chronic absenteeism, well above the district average of 15%. Wise Primary, ranked #138, is the only 4-star elementary in the district, though still above state averages. Overall, this is an exceptional district where poverty does not determine outcomes, but addressing absenteeism and targeted subject weaknesses could push it even higher.
