Summary:

Wise County Public Schools is home to three high schools — Central High, Union High, and Eastside High — serving grades 9–12 for a combined 1,658 students in rural southwest Virginia. The Wise County Public Schools district ranks #2 out of 131 Virginia school districts with a 5-star rating, and all three of its high schools land in the top 13% of Virginia high schools. That is especially notable given that 88–91% of students at each school qualify for free or reduced-price lunch.

Central High is the clear academic leader. It ranks #4 out of 331 Virginia high schools (99th percentile), and has the district's highest graduation rate (99.4%) and lowest dropout rate (0.5%). Central also posts a perfect 100% proficiency score in Algebra II, plus strong results in Algebra I (98.06%) and English Reading (94.05%) — all while spending the least per student ($7,877). Union High excels in writing, posting the district's top Writing SOL scores for two straight years (96.63% in 2025–2026) and climbing from #55 to #24 in the state rankings. It also has the lowest student-teacher ratio (15.1). Eastside High has the best attendance (11.6% chronic absenteeism, below both district and state averages) and a perfect 100% Geometry score, but trails its peers with a 3.1% dropout rate and a 96.8% graduation rate.

Across common subjects, the district's high schools beat state averages by wide margins: Biology averages 88.77% versus 68.86% statewide, Writing averages 93.52% versus 79.89%, and Algebra I averages 92.91% versus 80.21%. Eastside rebounded from #109 to #43 in a single year, though it has some weak spots, including a 54.55% Geography proficiency. Union and Central also show strong momentum, with Central climbing from #10 to #4 over three years. For parents, the takeaway is clear: all three schools are strong choices, with Central leading overall, Union the writing standout, and Eastside a great option for attendance and geometry, though it lags slightly in graduation and dropout metrics.
