North Summit Middle

North Summit Middle is a public school serving 323 students in grades 5–8 in Coalville, a smaller community in northern Utah and part of the high-performing North Summit District. The district ranks 17th out of 92 Utah districts, placing it in the 82nd percentile statewide. North Summit Middle ranked 27th out of 217 Utah schools in 2025–2026, or in the 88th percentile, and earned a four-star rating. Although this was down from an exceptional 4th-place ranking the previous year, the school has consistently ranked in Utah’s upper tier over the long term.

Academically, North Summit Middle performs above Utah averages in English language arts, mathematics, and science. Science is its clearest strength: approximately 67.2% of students were proficient overall, including 73.8% in 6th grade. The school was especially strong in 6th grade across all three subjects and generally outperformed nearby Morgan Middle, particularly in 6th- and 7th-grade ELA and mathematics. The clearest improvement priority is 8th-grade mathematics, where 41.3% of students were proficient—well below Morgan’s 65.2% and Ecker Hill Middle’s 61.7%. Fifth-grade mathematics also declined notably from the prior year.

Attendance is a major strength. North Summit Middle’s chronic absenteeism rate fell to 6.5% in 2024–2025, compared with 14.9% in the district and 23.8% statewide. That was slightly better than Morgan’s 6.8% and substantially better than Ecker Hill’s 21.4%. The school’s student-teacher ratio was 19.4:1, higher than both comparison schools, while about 20.74% of students qualified for free or reduced-price lunch. Overall, North Summit combines strong, durable academic results with excellent attendance. Families may want to watch whether the recent ranking decline is temporary and whether 8th-grade mathematics improves, but the school remains a consistently effective option.
