Summary

Esperanza School is a public school in West Valley City serving about 575 students in kindergarten through grade 7, in an area with a relatively high level of economic need and attendance challenges. The school ranks 437th of 563 Utah schools, at the 22nd percentile, and has a one-star rating. This is a major improvement from the 1st percentile in 2015–2016, although its recent high of the 38th percentile in 2023–2024 was not sustained. Among nearby schools, Esperanza generally performs better than Hunter School, Dos Mundos Academy, Jackling School, Monroe School, and several other nearby schools, but it trails Monticello Academy and Neil Armstrong Academy.

Academically, grade 4 math is a clear bright spot: 54.9% of students reached proficiency, above Utah’s 50.4% and higher than both Monticello Academy and Neil Armstrong Academy. Esperanza also tends to outperform most nearby traditional schools in elementary English language arts and math. However, science is the school’s broadest weakness, with proficiency at 35.6% in grade 4, 30.1% in grade 5, and 25.7% in grade 6, all well below state results. Upper-grade performance is also concerning: grade 6 ELA was 17.2%, grade 6 math was 21.2%, and grade 7 results were reported as ranges of 10–29% in ELA and science and 20–38% in math. These figures suggest parents should ask how the school supports the transition into grades 6 and 7.

Attendance is another major concern. Chronic absenteeism was 40.2% in 2024–2025, compared with 23.8% statewide and 19.8% at Monticello Academy. Esperanza also had a relatively high student-teacher ratio of 23.4:1. On the positive side, the school has been especially effective for Hispanic students and English learners compared with similar schools statewide, ranking in the 82nd to 96th percentile for Hispanic students over the last three years and in the 92nd percentile for English learners in 2024–2025. Overall, Esperanza appears stronger than most nearby options but has important improvement needs in attendance, science, and upper-grade instruction.
