Summary

Freedom Preparatory Academy is a large alternative school in Provo serving 1,248 students in prekindergarten through grade 12. The school has a student-teacher ratio of 16.1:1, and 42.4% of students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. Its 94.0% graduation rate in 2024–25 was higher than Utah’s 89.8% average and higher than nearby American Leadership Academy (92.2%) and Landmark High (88.2%).

The school’s biggest strength is helping students stay on track to graduate, but test results show important academic challenges. In 2025–26, elementary results were often near the state average, with grade 3 ELA and math above the Utah rates. Performance dropped sharply in grade 7, especially in ELA (27.8%), math (32.4%), and science (29.4%). High school results were weakest in mathematics: 18.0% of grade 9 students and 12.0% of grade 10 students were proficient, compared with 39.4% and 29.4% statewide. High school ELA and science results were also below state averages. These results suggest that grade 7 transitions and secondary math and literacy deserve particular attention.

Chronic absenteeism is another concern: 25.2% of students were chronically absent in 2024–25, slightly above Utah’s 23.8% rate but below Landmark High (50.2%) and Spectrum Academy - Pleasant Grove (47.6%). American Leadership Academy had lower absenteeism (21.3%) and stronger high school test results, making it the most useful nearby academic comparison. Overall, the school combines strong graduation outcomes with uneven academic proficiency, particularly in grades 7–10.
