Summary

Options High School is a small alternative high school in El Paso, TX, serving 136 students in grades 9-12 within the Socorro Independent School District (Isd). The school serves a high-poverty population, with over 80% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, and it offers a highly individualized approach with a low student-to-teacher ratio of 12.4:1 and very high per-pupil spending of $26,566.

Despite these resources, Options High School has consistently struggled with academic performance, ranking in the bottom 20-25% of Texas high schools for most of the past decade. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, only 0% of students were proficient in English I Reading, compared to 58.64% at nearby Americas High School. The school also has a volatile graduation rate (74.7% in 2023-2024 vs. the district's 90.3%) and a very high dropout rate (16.1% vs. the district's 1.1%). This creates a "high spending, low performance" paradox, where the school spends nearly three times more per student than nearby comprehensive high schools but achieves far lower academic outcomes.

Interestingly, Options High School has shown flashes of potential, such as a remarkable jump to the 73rd percentile in 2021-2022, and it has occasionally ranked highly for serving specific subgroups like Special Education and At-Risk students. However, this success has not been sustained. The contrast with Mission Early College High School, another small school in the same district with a similar poverty rate, is stark: Mission ECHS ranks in the 97th percentile, has a 100% graduation rate, and test scores 3-4 times higher. This comparison shows that a small school model can succeed, and Options High School's struggles are not inevitable, but the school remains a high-risk environment for students who have not thrived in traditional settings.
