Summary

Slocum High School in Elkhart, TX, is a very small rural school serving 86 students in grades 9-12 within the Slocum Independent School District (Isd), known for its intimate learning environment and a student-to-teacher ratio of just 7.5:1.

This school stands out for its exceptional performance in specific subjects, particularly Biology and English I Reading, where it consistently outperforms nearby schools and the state average. For example, in the 2025-2026 school year, Slocum achieved a 93.75% proficiency rate in Biology, far exceeding the state average of 70.51% and surpassing Elkhart High School (86.36%). Similarly, its English I Reading score of 86.67% was well above the state average of 55.43%. The school also boasts a perfect 0% dropout rate for five consecutive years and a 100% graduation rate in three of the last four years. However, its small size creates volatility; while it earned a 5-star rating in 2023-2024, it dropped to a 3-star rating the following year, highlighting how a single cohort can dramatically shift results. A critical area of concern is the school's performance with Special Education students, which plummeted to the 2nd percentile in 2025-2026, a stark contrast to its overall 75th percentile ranking.

Compared to the larger and more stable Elkhart High School (305 students), Slocum offers a "high-risk, high-reward" academic environment. While Slocum excels in Biology and English I, it struggles in Algebra I (46.43% proficient) and English II Reading (54.55%), areas where Elkhart is more consistent. The school effectively supports its economically disadvantaged students, ranking in the 75th percentile for that subgroup despite rising free/reduced lunch rates. For parents seeking a close-knit school with strong science and reading programs, Slocum is a compelling choice, but they should be aware of its uneven performance across subjects and the need for targeted support for Special Education students.

Open Quote I went to this school several years ago. Every body was so nice. I loved the teachers and other staff. I always remember having fun at this school. I wish I could have graduated from Slocum instead of the school I did. Close Quote
