Summary

Santa Anna Elementary is a small, rural PK-6 school in Santa Anna, TX, serving 146 students within the Santa Anna Independent School District (Isd).

This school is facing a severe academic crisis, marked by a dramatic and sustained decline in statewide rankings over the past decade. Once a 3-star school (56th percentile) in 2016-2017, it has fallen to a 0-star rating (6th percentile) in the most recent data. This decline is most alarming in mathematics, where proficiency rates have plummeted—for example, 4th-grade math dropped from above the state average to 0% proficiency. While nearby schools like Northwest Elementary and J B Stephens Elementary have shown stability, Santa Anna has lost 50 percentile points. The school’s challenges are systemic, affecting all student subgroups, and it ranks in the bottom 2% for female students and bottom 1% for white and low-income students. A rare bright spot is 5th-grade reading, where proficiency (57.14%) nearly matches the state average and exceeds both Northwest and J.B. Stephens, suggesting a potential model for improvement.

Interestingly, Santa Anna has a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.2:1, better than all nearby schools, yet it fails to translate this advantage into academic success. It also spends more per student ($11,503) than its peers, including Coleman Elementary ($9,245), but achieves far worse results. This points to an efficiency problem, where resources are not effectively improving learning. The collapse occurred after the pandemic, not during it, indicating a recent and acute crisis requiring urgent intervention. The isolated success in 5th-grade reading offers a blueprint, but overall, Santa Anna Elementary is a high-spending, low-performing school in severe distress.

Open Quote The school is unsatisfactory. The principle is not willing to do what is needed when a teacher bullies a student. Also tells other children to bully a student. If you are military they will accept you at first and then they are willing to make your child like an outsider. The school system is willing to put a child in ISS (in school suspension) without the parents knowledge. Just imagine what other things they do without the parents knowledge. Close Quote
