Greenwood Hills Elementary faces several key challenges, including a significantly higher percentage of Hispanic students (77.14%) compared to nearby schools, which tend to have a higher percentage of White students. The school's academic performance, as measured by STAAR test scores, is generally lower than the district and state averages across various grade levels and subjects. For example, in 2023-2024, the school's 3rd grade reading proficiency rate was 34.48%, compared to the district's 52.47% and the state's 48.85%. Additionally, the school's performance varies significantly across different student subgroups, with White students performing relatively well, ranking in the top 10-15% of Texas elementary schools, while its Hispanic, English Language Learner, and Special Education students perform significantly worse, ranking in the bottom 30-50% of Texas elementary schools.

Greenwood Hills Elementary's statewide ranking has declined over the years, from 2174 out of 4260 Texas elementary schools in 2013-2014 to 2296 out of 4675 in 2023-2024, with a consistent 2-star rating from SchoolDigger. The school's performance is generally lower than the nearby Arapaho Classical Magnet, Mohawk Elementary, and Bowie Elementary, which consistently rank in the top 5-10% of Texas elementary schools and have higher academic proficiency rates. The high percentage of students qualifying for free or reduced-price lunch (over 75%) indicates that Greenwood Hills Elementary serves a predominantly low-income community, which may contribute to the school's academic challenges.

Open Quote Until the leadership of this school changes (namely, the principal), I would never recommend this school. There are a few really great teachers and probably more good teachers who are being kept from being great by a terrible principal. There are some amazing support staff (front office receptionist), but there are also some awful support staff. Special education is a joke, and the teachers and aides are uncaring and unqualified.
