Summary

Riojas Elementary is a PK-5 school in Pflugerville, TX, serving 738 students within the Pflugerville Independent School District (Isd), and it consistently ranks among the top 20% of Texas elementary schools, currently placing in the 91st percentile with a 5-star rating.

Riojas Elementary stands out for its exceptional academic performance, dramatically outperforming both the district and state averages in core subjects like reading and math. For example, 5th-grade reading proficiency reached 81.63%, compared to the district's 61.79%. The school also maintains a favorable student-to-teacher ratio of 14.8:1, which supports individualized attention. However, a key area for improvement is a significant achievement gap in Spanish-language STAAR tests, where 3rd-grade reading proficiency was only 11.11% versus 75.93% in English, indicating a need for targeted support for English Language Learners. Additionally, 5th-grade science scores, while still above district averages, are a relative weak point compared to the school's stellar reading and math results.

When comparing Riojas to nearby schools, interesting contrasts emerge. Its closest competitor, Murchison Elementary (1.09 miles away), is also a 5-star school but excels in math, with 4th-grade math proficiency at 87.2% versus Riojas's 59.18%, while Riojas leads in reading. This highlights that even top-tier schools have distinct academic strengths. Furthermore, Riojas is an "island of excellence" within a diverse district, as nearby schools like Brookhollow Elementary (3.15 miles away) rank in the 35th percentile, demonstrating that school-level factors like leadership and teaching staff are powerful drivers of success.

Open Quote The school is situated in a higher middle class neighborhood. It is relatively new, the teachers are great, the principal does well running the school. The only issue is the boundaries for the school have zoned in lower income families near north Austin. This means the test scores for the schools have lowered and the ratings have lowered for the school. Taxes are being used to bus these kids from several miles away. Not sure if the school gets more funding for bringing in the kids from North Austin, but it does bring down the quality of the school. Close Quote
