Summary

Caldwell Elementary is a K-5 public school in McKinney, TX, serving 409 students as part of the McKinney Independent School District (Isd). Located in the historic downtown area, this school has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past decade, rising from low ratings to earn a 3-star rating (50th percentile statewide) in the most recent data, though its journey has been marked by significant year-to-year volatility.

A standout feature of Caldwell is its exceptional performance in 5th grade reading, where students achieved a 79.73% proficiency rate in 2023-2024—well above both the state and district averages. However, this success has not been consistent, with scores dropping to 49.12% in the most recent year, suggesting that strong results may depend on specific student cohorts rather than systemic improvements. The school also maintains a low student-teacher ratio of 12.1:1 and spends $11,782 per student, higher than many nearby schools like Roy Lee Walker Elementary ($9,333) and Valley Creek Elementary ($10,503), yet these resources have not consistently translated into top overall performance.

Compared to its neighbor Burks Elementary, just 0.59 miles away and serving a similar demographic profile, Caldwell shows a higher potential ceiling—reaching the 74th percentile in its best year versus Burks' 45th. However, both schools face similar challenges with consistency. Just 3 miles away, Robert L Puster Elementary in the Lovejoy Independent School District (Isd) scores in the 99th percentile with a very low economic disadvantage rate, highlighting the stark socioeconomic contrasts in the area. For parents, Caldwell represents a school with clear strengths in certain areas and a demonstrated ability to improve, but one that still struggles with consistency across all grade levels and student groups.

Open Quote Caldwell is a great school and the only dual language campus in McKinney! Our children have the opportunity for greater success in all aspects of life as they learn everything in Spanish and English beginning in Kinder.
We have terrific teachers and great parents too! Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter is a 2nd grader in Caldwell Elementary's two-way dual language program, and I'm consistently impressed with her language abilities. The teachers care, and the school's administration is strong. I highly recommend this school for its dedication to the students and bilingualism. It's such a joy to hear my daughter speak in a foreign language. She's receiving an elite education at a public school. Don't look at test scores alone. They don't reflect what is happening at Caldwell. The children are learning their primary subjects, but also Spanish/English at a critical point for language acquisition. Good for McKinney ISD for offering this amazing, innovative program. Close Quote
