Summary

McKinney Boyd High School is a large, high-performing public high school in McKinney, TX, serving over 2,500 students in grades 9-12 as part of the McKinney Independent School District (Isd).

McKinney Boyd is the academic leader within its own district, significantly outperforming McKinney High School and McKinney North High School in state rankings and test scores. Its strongest area is English Language Arts, where proficiency rates are well above state and district averages. However, the school faces stiff competition from neighboring districts like Prosper Independent School District (Isd) and Frisco Independent School District (Isd), where schools such as Independence High School and Walnut Grove High School post even higher rankings. A notable concern is Algebra I performance, where only 47% of students are proficient—below the state average and a significant outlier compared to the district's own average of 68%. This is a challenge shared by many high-performing schools in the region, including Heritage High School and Rock Hill High School.

While the school excels overall, it faces an equity challenge in serving its most vulnerable students. Performance for students from low socioeconomic backgrounds and English Language Learners is significantly lower than the school's average, with ELL performance dropping sharply in recent years. The school maintains a very high graduation rate (around 97%) and a low dropout rate, indicating a stable environment. Its overall state ranking has seen a slight decline over the past decade, from a peak in the mid-2010s to its current solid standing. For parents, McKinney Boyd offers a strong, reliable education, particularly in the humanities, but it is worth noting the specific challenges in math and the need to support all students equitably.

Open Quote Boyd is honestly a great school when it comes down to it. Yes the new tardy policy is a little crazy and holds you accountable for your attendance, and yes the administration does pretty much stick to the rule book, but at the same time they're humane about it. They are all actual people with emotions, not robots-as it sometimes feels like teachers are. As long as you treat them with respect they will treat ylou with respect in return. The teachers are honestly sooo great (well the preap and ap ones anyways) cause those were basically the classes I took. and they have an OUTSTANDING gt program. The teachers really push you to do your best. Granted there are a few teachers who really arent that great, but they are few far and inbetween. Throughout my 4 years at Boyd and 28 classes (plus a few dual credit) that I took (all with different teachers) I only had 3 teachers that i didn't like. All of the teachers are really passionate and the ones who seem strict at first are the ones who will push you to do your best. Outstanding teachers whos class you will end up loving if you put the work in: Amanda Day, Jennifer Bennett, Richard McGowan, Linda Mirro, Randy Bilyeu, David Weintraub, Allen Parr, Tamara Mitchell, and Samuel Thomas.
