Summary

Jan Schiff Elementary is a mid-sized elementary school (PK-5) in Missouri City, TX, serving 811 students as part of the Fort Bend Independent School District (Isd), a district ranked in the 69th percentile statewide. While the school has a history of strong performance, earning 4- and 5-star ratings from 2016 to 2022, recent data shows a concerning downward trend, dropping from the 83rd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 63rd percentile for the 2025-2026 school year. This decline is especially notable when compared to nearby schools like Anne McCormick Sullivan Elementary and Sonal S Bhuchar Elementary, both of which are in the 99th percentile and have been consistently improving.

The school’s biggest challenge is in mathematics, where 4th and 5th-grade proficiency rates (40.44% and 40.12%) are significantly below the district average (57.04% and 54.67%). This is a stark contrast to high-performing neighbors like Scanlan Oaks Elementary, where 4th and 5th-grade math proficiency is 73.68% and 83.47%. Reading scores are a relative strength, generally above the state average, but they still lag behind the district average, particularly in 4th grade. The school has also seen a decline across most student subgroups, including historically strong groups like White and Hispanic students, while consistently struggling with students from low socio-economic backgrounds. A bright spot is the school’s historical excellence with English Language Learner students, ranking in the 86th-96th percentile in recent years.

Interestingly, Jan Schiff’s per-student spending ($9,405) is moderate and does not correlate with performance—it spends less than lower-performing schools like Quail Valley Elementary ($16,032) but also less than higher-performing schools like Sienna Crossing Elementary ($9,408). The school’s decline suggests systemic issues that have not been corrected, especially since its high-performing neighbors rebounded from pandemic dips while Jan Schiff continued to slide. For parents, this means Jan Schiff is a school in transition—once a top-tier option, it now faces significant challenges in math and overall performance, making it important to compare with nearby schools that are achieving exceptional results.

Open Quote Bulling issues over the top. This school lacks leadership the right-hand doesn't know what the left is doing. With no discipline, kids are allowed to use their phones during the class because not enough computers, but instead of completing assignments, kids just play on the phones and distract others. Transportation is horrible the bus is late for pick up and drop-off, so poor kids miss either breakfast or part of the class. After multiple complaints to the principal and transportation department, this issue persists. Close Quote
