Summary

Duncanville High School is a large, traditional public high school in the Duncanville Independent School District (Isd), serving 4,399 students in grades 9-12 in a community where over 70% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. While the school has consistently ranked in the bottom third of Texas high schools, it stands out for its strong graduation rate of 92.3%, which is higher than nearby comprehensive schools like David W Carter High School (75.3%) and Justin F Kimball High School (70.4%). This suggests the school has effective systems to keep students on track to graduate, even as its academic proficiency rates lag behind state averages.

However, the school faces significant academic challenges, particularly in foundational subjects. In 2025-2026, only 23% of students were proficient in Algebra I, compared to the state average of 54%, while nearby specialized schools like Trinidad Garza Early College At Mt View achieved 91% proficiency. This creates a "graduation vs. proficiency" paradox where students graduate but may not leave with the academic skills expected at the state level. Interestingly, the school shows a bright spot with its English Language Learner students, who rank in the 55th percentile statewide, but struggles significantly with its Gifted and Talented students, who rank in the 16th percentile—an unusual pattern that suggests the school may not be providing enough enrichment for its highest-achieving students.

When comparing resources, Duncanville spends about $10,443 per student, which is less than David W Carter High School ($12,462) but more than Trinidad Garza Early College At Mt View ($9,714), yet Garza achieves far superior results. This indicates that how money is spent matters more than the total amount. The school's student-teacher ratio of 18.1 is also higher than many nearby schools, which could contribute to its academic struggles. For parents considering options, the nearby Ume Dallas Secondary and Trinidad Garza Early College At Mt View demonstrate that high academic performance is achievable with similar student populations, offering alternative models for families seeking stronger academic outcomes.

Open Quote They keep teachers that curse at students and refuse to teach the students they just hand out packets. Look at their test scores How do you get a 27% pass rate (keeping in mind passing includes those meeting score in line with a D. In fact the test scores get WORSE as the school grades progress so basically the percentage of kids passing fresh out of middle school is almost quadrupedal those in 11th grade!!!!! So let me break this down for you this high school gets kids where MOST of them are learning and progressing and by 11th grade have only 27% able to pass a writing test like as in 59.9 D passing. You are PAYING for these kids to be UNTAUGHT!!!!! Close Quote
