Summary

Clint Q Smith Elementary is a PK-4 school in the Duncanville Independent School District (Isd) serving 344 students in a high-poverty area, where 83% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch. After years of ranking in the bottom 1-2% of Texas elementary schools, the school has shown a dramatic turnaround in the 2025-2026 school year, jumping to the 13th percentile—its best ranking in nearly a decade. This recent progress is the most hopeful sign for the school, though it remains fragile and inconsistent across grade levels.

The school's standout achievement is in 3rd-grade reading, where 44.9% of students met proficiency in 2025-2026, significantly higher than the district average of 35.62% and the highest among all Duncanville ISD peers. This is a critical foundational skill that suggests early-grade interventions may be working. However, 4th-grade scores remain very low (27.78% in reading, 22.22% in math), well below district averages, indicating that success has not yet carried over to older students. The school also shows a notable strength with Hispanic students, ranking in the 48th percentile for this subgroup—a massive improvement from the 5th percentile the year prior. In contrast, nearby Merrifield Elementary (11th percentile) and Charles Acton Leadershp Academy (13th percentile) remained at similar low levels, while S Gus Alexander Junior Elementary (18th percentile) saw only modest improvement.

A key area of concern is the school's declining support for special education students. In 2023-2024, Smith was a top-tier school for this group, ranking in the 83rd percentile, but that has dropped to the 21st and 25th percentiles in subsequent years. The school spends $12,039 per student—higher than the district average and more than peers like William Lee Hastings Elementary ($10,773) and James R Bilhartz Junior Elementary ($11,054)—but this higher spending has not historically translated to higher performance. The recent uptick suggests resources may now be used more effectively. For comparison, Ume Preparatory Academy - Duncanville, a charter school in the top 15% of Texas districts, serves a more affluent student body (45% free/reduced lunch) and achieves significantly higher test scores, highlighting the immense challenges high-poverty schools face. Smith's future success depends on replicating its 3rd-grade gains in higher grades and reversing the special education decline.

Open Quote My daughter has gone to Smith for 3 years now and we love the school. The new principal is amazing she takes pride in bringing the school together and doing things for the kids. The last one was lazy and more worried about gossip than the children. My daughter has had amazing teachers also Ms. Ducan being one she loves the students and pushed my daughter to reach all her goals. Good communication also. Close Quote
