Zavala Elementary

Zavala now outperforms these neighbors in 5th grade Reading, with a 53.85% proficiency rate compared to 42% at Travis and 43% at Oak Park. The school also excels with its most vulnerable students, ranking in the 63rd percentile for low socio-economic status students and the 61st percentile for special education students—a stark contrast to its overall ranking and a testament to effective targeted interventions.

While Zavala's progress in Reading and Math is impressive, Science remains a critical weakness, with only 17.65% of 5th graders proficient in 2024-2025. The school's success is particularly notable when compared to Wynn Seale Metropolitan School Of Design, a high-performing magnet school (77th percentile) with a lower poverty rate. Zavala's achievement with its high-poverty population is arguably more impressive, as it demonstrates effective school-level intervention in a high-need environment. The key challenge ahead will be replicating its Reading and Math success in Science and ensuring progress for "At Risk" students matches gains made with other subgroups.
