Summary

J L Williams/Lovett Ledger Elementary is a K-5 school in the Copperas Cove Independent School District (Isd) serving 635 students, with over 62% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school currently ranks in the 43rd percentile statewide, earning a 2-star rating, and has shown inconsistent performance over the past decade, with a notable low point in 2021-2022.

One of the most significant concerns is the school's persistent struggle with mathematics, where proficiency rates are critically low—only 27.6% of 3rd graders, 37.3% of 4th graders, and 47.0% of 5th graders met standards in the most recent year. These scores fall well below district and state averages, and nearby schools like Martin Walker Elementary (55% in 3rd grade math) and C R Clements/Hollie Parsons Elementary (62.3% in 5th grade math) are performing much higher. The school also shows a stark gender achievement gap, with female students ranking in the 57th percentile statewide while male students rank in the 27th percentile—a 30-point gap. Additionally, support for Gifted and Talented students has collapsed, dropping from the 50th percentile to the 5th percentile in just one year.

Despite these challenges, the school has pockets of strength, particularly in upper-grade reading, where 4th and 5th grade proficiency rates (55.9% and 57.8%) actually exceed state averages. However, the school significantly underperforms its district peers, as Martin Walker Elementary (78th percentile) and House Creek Elementary (64th percentile) achieve much higher rankings despite similar demographics. The school's spending per student ($8,908) is below the district average, and its student-teacher ratio (13.2) is higher than at Martin Walker (10.7), suggesting that resource allocation and instructional quality may be key factors driving the performance gap.

Open Quote This school is horrible at working with children who need a little extra. If you have a child who is ADHD, a genius, or anything else other than a cookie cutter kid, this school is NOT for you. The teachers and administration have no respect for the kids. They talk to them like they are idiots and expect the students to behave like adults. I am thoroughly disgusted with this school. There is SO much to say about this aweful school, PLEASE email me with any question. If you have a wonderful child who doesn't have any issues, than this school may work well for you. However, if your child's attitude changes due to deployed parent or whatever the case, be prepared for a long, long battle. Close Quote
