Deretchin Elementary in The Woodlands, TX, is a large, high-performing school serving 1,209 students in grades PK through 6 as part of the Conroe Independent School District (Isd), a district ranked in the 75th percentile statewide.

Deretchin has a remarkable track record of academic excellence, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger every year since 2015-2016 and consistently ranking in the top 6% of all Texas elementary schools. The school also excels with specific student groups, ranking in the 99th percentile for Hispanic students in a recent year and showing strong support for at-risk students. While its overall state ranking has slightly dipped from a peak of the 99th percentile to the 94th percentile, it remains an elite school. Notably, its closest neighbor, Tough Elementary, has posted higher raw test scores in several recent grades, creating a highly competitive local environment.

One area for improvement is support for English Language Learner (ELL) students, where the school’s ranking dropped from the 95th to the 74th percentile in recent years. Despite this, Deretchin demonstrates strong operational efficiency, achieving top-tier results with per-student spending ($8,693) that is mid-range compared to peers like Buckalew Elementary ($9,246) and Galatas Elementary ($7,894). Overall, Deretchin offers a consistently excellent education with particular strengths in math and science, making it a reliable choice for families seeking a high-performing elementary school in The Woodlands.

Open Quote We moved to The Woodlands, from another Houston suburb, mostly due to the reputation of the schools here. My daughter is in Kindergarten and has had a very positive experience. Her teacher communicates with the parents via e-mail nearly every other day and responds quickly when I have a question. Her teacher provided all of the parents access to a neat online web site for e-books. When my daughter gets home she immediately wants me to log into the web site for her to read. It firsts reads a story to her and then she will read the story to me. It's awesome. They do hands-on science quite a bit, which is impressive. She talks about wearing goggles and the activities they did that day. They also get to play on the playground and/or have gym everyday, which I think is extremely important for the children. They have music and art as well.

I have heard the others teachers are just as great as the teacher my daughter has, which is wonderful to hear that we will have many years to come of a positive learning environment. I have noticed the kids at her school seem to be sweet and well mannered. When I drop her off in the morning, the 6th grade helpers always say hi to me with a smile and tell me to have a good day. Earlier in the school year, they would walk her to her class until she became comfortable with finding her classroom. The parents and the teachers have both done an amazing job with all of the children.

I'm so glad that our decision to move here has been worth what we went through to get here. Where we lived before, the houses sold at a loss, but here the houses sell for asking price. So, we lost some money to come here, but it has been worth it and we are enjoying The Woodlands. Close Quote
