Summary

Buckalew Elementary in The Woodlands, TX, is a high-performing school within the Conroe Independent School District (Isd), serving 823 students in grades PK through 4 in a relatively affluent community where only 18.1% of students are eligible for free or reduced lunch.

Buckalew stands out for its sustained, elite academic performance, having ranked in the top 1% of Texas elementary schools for nearly a decade. Its STAAR test scores consistently outperform district and state averages by 15-35 percentage points across all subjects and grades. Notably, the school is exceptionally effective at closing achievement gaps, ranking in the 99th percentile for its work with low socio-economic status students in recent years. Despite having the highest student-teacher ratio among its immediate Conroe ISD peers (17.2 compared to 13.0 at Ride Elementary and 15.3 at Powell Elementary), Buckalew achieves top-tier results, demonstrating highly effective instructional strategies. It also operates efficiently, spending less per student ($9,246) than several nearby schools while achieving higher rankings and test scores.

While Buckalew remains excellent, its state ranking has slightly slipped from its peak as other schools like David Elementary and Galatas Elementary have improved rapidly. The most recent data shows a notable drop in performance for African American and Multi-racial students, which the school should monitor closely. For families considering alternatives, Tough Elementary offers a K-6 environment with exceptionally high 6th-grade scores, while out-of-district options like Tom R Ellisor Elementary (Magnolia ISD) have significantly lower test scores, reinforcing Buckalew’s status as a premier educational choice in the area.

Open Quote The Administration does not recognize disabilities or learning disorders. Students are not able to be identified or receive special education services--no appropriate and free public education for those who struggle or have a special need. They cater to the students who can test high and are immediate compliers with no discipline issues. My son's disability is a common one--ADHD. Close Quote
