Summary

Mathews Elementary in Austin, TX, is a well-regarded public school serving 366 students from Pre-K through 6th grade in the heart of the 78703 area, part of the Austin Independent School District (Isd). With a student-to-teacher ratio of 15.1:1 and about 34.7% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch, Mathews consistently ranks among the top 12% of elementary schools in Texas, earning a 4-star rating from SchoolDigger. Its standout feature is exceptional performance with students from lower socioeconomic backgrounds, ranking in the 92nd percentile for this group—a stark contrast to nearby high-performing schools like Casis Elementary and Barton Hills Elementary, which serve far fewer low-income students. Mathews also excels with English Language Learners, ranking in the 94th percentile, and shows particularly strong results for male students (92nd percentile), suggesting its learning environment is especially effective for boys.

While Mathews is a top-tier school, it operates in a competitive neighborhood with several elite options, including Zilker Elementary (93rd percentile) and Lee Elementary (93rd percentile). Its unique grade span (PK-6) sets it apart from most nearby schools, which only go to 5th grade, allowing students an extra year in a familiar setting before middle school. However, the school shows a notable "math dip" in 6th grade, with proficiency dropping from 61.82% in 5th grade to 38.1% in 6th grade in the most recent year, suggesting the curriculum or instruction at that level may need attention. Year-over-year performance can vary by cohort, but the school's overall system consistently produces strong results.

Mathews' per-student spending of $11,398 is in the middle of the pack among its high-performing peers, reinforcing that effective teaching and community support matter more than raw spending. This is highlighted by the stark contrast with Sanchez Elementary, just 2 miles away, which serves a much higher concentration of low-income students (90.19% free/reduced lunch) and ranks in the 6th percentile. For parents exploring options, Mathews offers a strong, inclusive environment that drives achievement across diverse student groups, making it a compelling choice in a neighborhood full of excellent schools.

Open Quote Principal often does not answer, when difficult issues e.g. bullying etc, need to be adressed. Its more about smiling, waving and pretending things are OK. New students are not treated as equal. We recommend you look for better alternatives. There are many other good elementary schools. Close Quote

Open Quote My daughter loves Mathews! The teachers there love Mathews too. The people in the office love you and you love them. They have adaptive and challenging curriculum. Every Friday there is a rally in the gym where students who were nominated by teachers and other students get recognized for moments where they showed great character and integrity.
If you are like me, and you think having your kids spend their day in a culturally diverse atmosphere is important, then you will love this school for that reason too.
The Principle is out front every day at the drop off area and she leads the Friday rallies. Parents are encouraged to volunteer in the classroom, the festivals, and welcome every day to come eat with your kid.
The neighborhood is also my favorite. On cold mornings we get hot chocolate and breakfast tacos down the street at the coffee shop then walk to school. Close Quote
