Summary

Bryker Woods Elementary is a small, high-performing public school in the heart of Austin, TX (78703), serving 284 students in grades PK through 5 within the Austin Independent School District (Isd). This school has a long-standing reputation for academic excellence, consistently ranking in the top 15% of Texas elementary schools, though it has experienced a notable decline from its peak 97th percentile ranking in 2022-2023 to the 84th percentile in the most recent data. Despite this trend, Bryker Woods boasts an exceptional strength in 4th Grade Reading, with 87.23% of students proficient—a rate that is over 25 percentage points above the district average and the highest among all nearby schools for that grade and subject.

However, the school shows a clear split in performance between subjects. While Reading scores are consistently excellent, Math scores are more volatile and, in some recent years, have fallen below district and state averages. For example, 4th Grade Math proficiency dropped to 41.86% in 2024-2025, which was below the district average of 44.63%. This inconsistency is less pronounced at nearby top schools like Highland Park Elementary and Gullett Elementary, which show more balanced performance across subjects. Additionally, Bryker Woods spends less per student ($9,861) than many of its peers, such as Maplewood Elementary ($12,708) and Reilly Elementary ($12,828), suggesting that parent-teacher organization fundraising plays a significant role in supplementing the budget.

While Bryker Woods remains a strong school, its declining state ranking and struggles in Math are critical areas to watch. The school also faces challenges in serving specific student groups effectively, with recent data showing a 1-star rating for Hispanic students and a 3-star rating for Gifted and Talented students. Nearby Casis Elementary, which shares a similar demographic profile, has shown more stable performance and has recently overtaken Bryker Woods in overall state ranking. For parents, Bryker Woods offers a world-class reading program and a small, close-knit community, but it is worth comparing its Math performance and equity metrics against other top-tier options in the area.

Open Quote Coming in as a volunteer, I noticed the teachers were very unkind to their students. They were impatient and their behavior was often worse than the students' in my opinion.
There is a high amount of privlaged white kids that are going to do fine on test scores but I worry about their social emotional health and what that can mean for our future. Close Quote
