Summary

Zilker Elementary is a high-performing public school in Austin, TX, serving 506 students from Pre-K through 5th grade within the Austin Independent School District (Isd), and it consistently ranks among the top 7% of all elementary schools in Texas.

Zilker Elementary stands out as an academic powerhouse, earning a 5-star rating from SchoolDigger and ranking in the 93rd to 96th percentile statewide over the last four years. Its STAAR test scores are significantly higher than both the district and state averages, with 4th-grade reading proficiency reaching 88% and 4th-grade math proficiency at 71.4% in the 2025-2026 school year. This performance dramatically outpaces nearby schools; for example, Zilker's 4th-grade reading proficiency is nearly double that of Travis Hts Elementary (51.5%) and triple that of Galindo Elementary (48.5%). The school also excels across most student subgroups, earning 5-star ratings for male, white, multi-racial, and special education students. With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 13.2:1 and only 21.5% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, Zilker serves a relatively low-poverty population, which is a key factor in its high achievement.

While Zilker is undeniably excellent, there are areas for attention. The school's performance with English Language Learners (ELL) has been inconsistent, dropping from the 97th percentile in 2022-2023 to the 42nd percentile in 2023-2024, suggesting that support systems for these students may need strengthening. Additionally, a slight "5th-grade dip" in both math and reading proficiency scores indicates a potential challenge as students prepare for middle school. Despite these nuances, Zilker remains a premier choice for families in its attendance zone, offering a world-class elementary education that is highly efficient in its use of resources compared to struggling nearby schools like Dawson Elementary.

Open Quote I am a past student who attended Zilker from k-6th as well as my sister, brother, mother, and uncles. Zilker is a wonderful school, has always had a friendly atmosphere and has an excellent learning system. Things that I learned back in 4th grade with my teacher Mr. Suhes has stuck with me until this day! Close Quote
