Summary

Olsen Park Elementary in Amarillo, TX, is a mid-sized school serving 387 students in grades PK-5 within the Amarillo Independent School District (Isd), where about 53% of students qualify for free or reduced lunch, and it has historically been a solid performer with a recent shift in its performance trajectory.

Olsen Park stands out for its exceptional 5th-grade performance, which dramatically outpaces both the district and state averages. In the most recent data, 77.78% of 5th graders were proficient in reading and 74.6% in math, compared to state averages of 58.47% and 47.38%, respectively. This creates a "Jekyll and Hyde" pattern where 3rd and 4th-grade math scores lag behind, but 5th-grade scores soar—a unique advantage over nearby schools like Puckett Elementary, where 5th-grade math proficiency is only 48.28%. The school also operates with remarkable efficiency, spending just $8,972 per student—less than every nearby peer, such as San Jacinto Elementary ($12,212)—while still achieving higher overall rankings than many higher-spending schools.

However, the school has seen a sharp decline in its overall state ranking, dropping from the 86th percentile in 2024-2025 to the 63rd percentile in 2025-2026, its lowest in a decade. This drop is driven by a significant decline in performance among students from low socioeconomic backgrounds, who fell from the 72nd to the 38th percentile. On the positive side, the Gifted and Talented program remains a major strength, ranking in the 85th percentile statewide. The school’s ability to excel in 5th grade suggests a highly effective strategy for preparing students for middle school, making it a compelling choice for families focused on upper-grade success.

Open Quote Olsen is an excellent school with teachers that focus on the entire child not just the test scores. I have a child with ADHD and emotional issues. The teachers, staff, and principals have worked hard to help us turn her around and she is a different child. She loves learning and going to school. Close Quote
