Summary

Tom Green Elementary in Buda, TX, is a PK-5 school in the Hays Consolidated Independent School District serving 612 students, with a student-teacher ratio of 12.6:1 and nearly 60% of students qualifying for free or reduced lunch. The school has historically ranked in the lower tier of Texas elementary schools, earning a 2-star rating, but it shows notable strengths in specific areas that set it apart from nearby schools.

Tom Green's most significant challenge is persistent underperformance in mathematics, with 3rd and 5th grade proficiency rates around 30%—dramatically lower than nearby high-performing schools like Elm Grove Elementary (1.7 miles away), which posts math scores above 60%. However, the school excels in serving Special Education students, ranking in the 52nd percentile (3 stars) in the most recent year—a dramatic turnaround from the previous year. Additionally, its Spanish-language instruction is a hidden gem: 4th grade Reading in Spanish (55.56% proficient) and Math in Spanish (33.33%) far exceed district and state averages, suggesting the bilingual program is highly effective even as English-language scores lag.

Tom Green sits in a "performance valley" surrounded by both high-performing schools like Carpenter Hill Elementary (5.19 miles away) and lower-performing ones like Science Hall Elementary. While the school's 5th grade Science scores are very low (11.7%), this is a district-wide issue affecting all nearby schools, including Elm Grove (43.81%). The key takeaway for parents is that Tom Green is not uniformly low-performing—it has pockets of excellence in Special Education and bilingual instruction that can be leveraged, though early literacy (3rd grade) and mathematics instruction need significant improvement.

Open Quote My son and daughter both go to this school/ They both have outstanding teachers. I'm familiar with many of the staff and volunteer there occasionally and I'm very happy that my kids attend this school. Close Quote

Open Quote We moved to buda for the awesome community and the great schools so we were heartbroken by our experience with Tom Green Elementary.

We weren't surprised to find numerous families had the same issues we did with the school and staff.

None of my children will be attending this school. Close Quote
