Despite its district ranking in the bottom quarter of Tennessee (1 star), Purpose Prep stands out as a high performer: it ranks 222nd of 1,019 schools statewide (78th percentile, 4 stars). In the most recent testing year, 61% of students were proficient in math and 64% in English language arts—nearly double the district averages of 32.4% and 31.8%, and well above state averages. Science proficiency sits at 46%, roughly matching the state average.

The school outperforms every nearby elementary school in all three tested subjects. The closest competitor, Shwab Elementary School, trails by 11 points in math and 22 points in ELA. Other nearby schools like Warner Elementary School, Hull-Jackson Elementary School, Jones Elementary School, and Tom Joy Elementary School post math proficiency between 10% and 28%, far below Purpose Prep's 61%.

Purpose Prep achieves these results while spending less than most peers—about $19,048 per student compared to $21,000+ at Shwab, Hull-Jackson, Jones, and Hattie Cotton Elementary School. Even with a high student-teacher ratio of 32.2, academic outcomes remain strong and have improved steadily over the past three years. Areas to watch include science, where the school is only at the state average, and chronic absenteeism, which at 19.4% is below the district rate of 23.3% but slightly above the state's 18.3%. Overall, Purpose Prep is a standout in its neighborhood, delivering exceptional results at lower cost than surrounding schools.

Open Quote This school is very challenging, but if your child can handle their curriculum then they'll be able to accomplish anything. Close Quote

Open Quote I was first attracted to this school because it is a reward school. I now regret my decision because I see that the school is militant at best and abusive at worst. A newsletter came home that requested that all students bring a change of clothes because accidents happen. Yet, my fourth-grade son has complained that his teacher times students when they ask to go to the restroom and if they are not back in 2 minutes, they are disciplined. I have heard from others that their children have urinated on themselves. On at least three occasions during the 2018-2019 school year my son complained about the teacher yelling at them. This year his fourth grade teacher cursed at them. The administration covers up the bad behavior of the teachers and denies any of the accusations have occurred. There is no school counselor, no talking allowed at lunch or on the bus, no PTA, and no room parents. I’m truly sorry I ever put my sons in this school. Close Quote
