Summary

Shwab Elementary School is a PK–5 public elementary school in East Nashville serving 329 students as part of Metro Nashville Public Schools. The school has posted one of the most dramatic turnarounds in the district: after spending most of the past decade in the bottom 8th–13th percentile of Tennessee elementary schools, Shwab climbed to the 47th percentile statewide in 2025–2026, ranking 541st out of 1,019 schools — its best showing in over a decade.

Shwab's math performance is a standout. In 2025–2026, 49.6% of students scored proficient in math, well above the district average of 32.4% and the state average of 43.0%. That puts Shwab on par with Nashville Classical East (51.5%) and trails only Purpose Prep (61.0%) among nearby schools — and far ahead of traditional-zone neighbors like Ida B. Wells (27.1%), Hull-Jackson (20.2%), and Tom Joy (12.9%). Chronic absenteeism has also dropped sharply to 14.8%, well below the district average of 23.3% and comparable to high-performing peers. And Shwab's English Learner students ranked in the 86th–95th percentile statewide in recent years — among the very best in Tennessee.

There is still room to grow. Science proficiency sits at 35.1%, below the state average of 46.9%, and 4th grade is the weakest grade across all subjects. Low-income students and girls also trail their peers, though both are improving. Even so, Shwab is now the strongest traditional zoned elementary in its immediate cluster, leading nearby Warner Elementary by nearly 20 points in math. For parents considering East Nashville schools, Shwab's steady upward trajectory makes it a compelling option.

Open Quote Dr. Gibbs arrival has been the best thing that has happen to our school. I have three children all of whom attend Schwab. At this point all I can say is that I wish that she had arrived sooner! While her arrival resulted in the departure of a few teachers. It appears that it was for the greater good. Every child is unique and every child is different. She truly understands different teaching techniques which is transparent within the train that she is delivering to her teachers. My children are actually excited about going to school! I am proud to call Shwab my childrens second home! Close Quote
