Stratford STEM Magnet School serves 810 students in grades 6–12 in the Metro Nashville Public Schools district in Nashville, TN, making it one of the few area schools that combines middle and high school grades under one roof. Despite its STEM magnet identity, the school ranks 327 out of 400 Tennessee high schools—18th percentile, or a 1-star rating. That places it well behind nearby magnets like Hume - Fogg High School (99th percentile), Nashville School Of The Arts (64th), KIPP Nashville Collegiate High School (58th), and East Nashville Magnet High School (53rd). Stratford performs ahead of only the lowest-ranking schools in the area, such as McGavock High School (17th) and Maplewood High School (16th).

The most concerning numbers for parents are attendance and graduation. Chronic absenteeism at Stratford is 50.1%, meaning half of all students miss significant instructional time, compared with 23.3% across Metro Nashville Public Schools and 18.3% statewide. The graduation rate is 77.0%, below the district's 83.4% and the state's 90.5%, while the dropout rate of 21.9% is more than three times the state average of 6.7%. Academic proficiency is low in every subject: only 11.2% of students are proficient in math and 12.4% in English Language Arts, versus 43.0% and 40.6% statewide. There are some encouraging signs. Chronic absenteeism has dropped sharply from 65.9% in 2021–2022, and the school's state ranking improved from the 1st percentile in 2016–2017 to the 29th percentile in 2024–2025 before slipping back to 18th. Special education students have made notable progress, climbing from the 10th to the 47th percentile in two years. Biology I and English II are relative strengths. Still, Stratford spends $19,832 per student—more than Hume - Fogg High School ($15,512) and Nashville School Of The Arts ($16,162)—yet trails them significantly in outcomes. For parents, the STEM label doesn't yet match the math results, and the middle grades clearly need the most attention, but the recent trajectory suggests improvement is possible.
