Summary

Margaret Allen Middle School is a public school in Nashville, TN, serving 306 students in grades 6-8 as part of Metro Nashville Public Schools. For families researching middle school options, the school has faced significant academic challenges over the past decade, placing consistently at the bottom of state rankings.

In 2025-2026, Margaret Allen Middle School ranked in the 5th percentile statewide, making it the lowest-ranked middle school in its immediate cluster of nearby schools. Academic proficiency rates are dramatically below district and state averages: only 12.3% of students were proficient in math and 10.8% in ELA, compared to roughly 32% and 31% districtwide, and 42% and 39% statewide. The gaps are equally stark in science and social studies, with 8th graders particularly affected—just 5.6% are proficient in science, and only 15.4% in Integrated Math I, versus 73.8% of 8th graders districtwide. Nearby schools prove better outcomes are possible in the same area: Meigs Middle School ranks #1 in Tennessee, while KIPP Academy Nashville and Rose Park Middle School post much higher proficiency rates and lower absenteeism.

Chronic absenteeism is a severe issue at Margaret Allen, with 28.6% of students chronically absent in 2024-2025, compared to 18.3% statewide. This is particularly concerning given the school spends $18,857 per student—more than nearby Meigs Middle—yet has shown no sustained improvement since 2017-2018. Most student subgroups rank in the bottom quartile academically; however, English Language Learner students have shown relative strength, ranking at the 44th percentile. For parents, this suggests that while the school receives substantial funding, the primary challenges lie in student attendance, school culture, and targeted instructional support.

Open Quote Former Student who attended this school. Would never take my future kids, suggest anyone else's kids, or even wish this on my worst enemy's children. Teachers and principals did nothing to help bullying. In fact, they had posed as a Magnet school when recruiting me via mail in the fourth grade, only for me to find out they were a failing public school halfway through the year after inquiring about why there were so many fights at a Magnet school. Education is subpar, teachers do not try, and there is no hope of succeeding lest you get recruited by a charter school like I did. Please stick to Nashville Prep, Liberty Collegiate, Nashville Academy of Computer Science, and RePublic High School. These schools did wonders for me and my sibling and cousins and might do wonders for your child as well. Trust me, dodge a bullet, this is a parent's worst nightmare. Close Quote
