Summary

Meigs Middle School, located on Ramsey Street in East Nashville, serves 692 students in grades 6–8 and ranks as the #1 middle school in Tennessee — an extraordinary achievement for a school within the Metro Nashville Public Schools district, which as a whole ranks in the bottom 11% of districts statewide. Meigs has placed in the top 11 schools in Tennessee nearly every year since 2013–2014 and has never fallen below the 95th percentile in reported data, earning a 5-star rating in the 2025–2026 SchoolDigger rankings.

The academic results are striking when compared with nearby schools. Meigs students score 90% or higher in every tested subject — 94.2% proficient in math, 93.3% in English language arts, 94.4% in science, and 88.3% in social studies — compared with district averages in the low 30s and state averages in the low 40s. The contrast with neighboring East Nashville Middle School, located just over half a mile away, is especially stark: math proficiency there is just 11.9% and English proficiency 8.5%. Even Head Middle School, the next-best nearby school, posts math proficiency near 54.7% — roughly 40 points below Meigs. Meigs's success is remarkably broad, extending to every demographic subgroup, with rankings in the top 1–2% statewide for each, including the #2 ranking among schools serving economically disadvantaged students.

Meigs also stands out for attendance and efficiency. Its chronic absenteeism rate (7.0%) is far below the district's 29.7%, and it achieves these results while spending less per student ($15,849) than many lower-performing nearby schools. John Early Middle School, for example, spends nearly $30,000 per student with math proficiency around 9%, while Jere Baxter Middle School and Margaret Allen Middle School struggle with chronic absenteeism above 25% and bottom-tier rankings. Meigs's consistent top-tier performance across every subject, demographic group, and measure of student engagement makes it a truly exceptional public middle school and a clear standout within its district.

Open Quote This is the best school I have ever attended. The teachers are great and the education is amazing. The cafeteria food however, is questionable... Close Quote

Open Quote Sometimes, this school was hard to bear. I just left eighth grade there. It was EXTREMELY difficult, and students need all the help they can get. Whether they want to ask for it, or not. They need it. But it's tons of fun to be there! The sports and clubs are great! The only Apple Mac Lab in the district is there! And 98 of the staff is amazing! The computer teacher, Mr. Stack, was one of my favorites. He also helps with the Meigs Media Team. (Which is so much and totally amazing!) I definitely recommend this school! Close Quote
