Summary

Adrian Burnett Elementary School is a public school serving 563 students in grades PK through 5, located on Brown Gap Road in Knoxville, Tennessee, within the Knox County Schools district. The school's statewide ranking has declined significantly in recent years, dropping to 752nd out of 1,019 elementary schools in Tennessee (26th percentile, 1 star) in the 2025-2026 school year, down from 575th (44th percentile, 2 stars) in 2023-2024.

Academically, Adrian Burnett's proficiency rates fall below district and state averages across all subjects — math at 28.5%, English language arts at 32.5%, and science at 33.7%, compared to district averages of 45%, 44.7%, and 50.9% respectively. This places the school well behind its nearest high-performing neighbors, including Shannondale Elementary (math 58%, ELA 62.1%) and Halls Elementary (math 65.7%, ELA 59.4%), both within about two miles. Notably, the school spends more per student ($15,316) than these higher-performing peers, yet the additional resources have not translated into higher scores. On a positive note, chronic absenteeism at 16.6% is better than the district (19.4%) and state (18.3%) averages and has improved significantly from 23.6% in 2021-2022.

The school has notable bright spots alongside its challenges. African American students at Adrian Burnett rank in the 85th percentile statewide — a genuine strength that stands out. However, English Language Learner and Special Education students lag significantly behind, and 4th grade shows a dramatic drop in proficiency across all subjects compared to 3rd and 5th grades. While 5th graders rebound to near state averages, the 4th grade plunge (math at 16.5% vs. 41.2% in 5th grade) points to a specific grade-level challenge that deserves attention. With a solid attendance record and clear areas of strength, the school has a foundation to build on, but addressing the 4th grade bottleneck and supporting at-risk subgroups will be critical to reversing the downward trend.

Open Quote Growing up, I always hated school. Adrian Burnett is a run down, crappy school with bad teachers and poor education. When I came to Halls Middle, I had a way better time learning. Also, they steal the NFL Arizona Cardinals logo and claim it's their own. But, it isn't, Plus, I'm a Tennessee Titans fan. All the kids acted like the kids from South Park and the detention is too strict for kids. Overall, come here if you want your kid to grow up to a mule. Close Quote
