Signal Mountain Middle/High School

Signal Mountain Middle/High School serves 1,396 students in grades 6–12 in Signal Mountain, TN, and ranks 25th out of 400 Tennessee high schools — placing it in the 94th percentile with a 5-star rating. This is especially notable because the school belongs to Hamilton County Schools, a district that ranks only in the 43rd percentile statewide. Signal Mountain has never ranked below the 91st percentile since the 2018–2019 school year, making it a consistently elite performer within an otherwise average district.

Academically, the school far outpaces district and state averages: roughly 70% of students are proficient in both math and English language arts, compared to about 40% for the district and state. Graduation rates reached 98.4% in 2024–2025, while chronic absenteeism sits at just 10.4% — about half the district rate. Nearby schools highlight the gap. The Howard School, only about ten miles away with a similar enrollment, posts just 6.7% English I proficiency compared to Signal Mountain's 72.4%, despite spending significantly more per student. Similarly, Lookout Valley Middle / High School spends the most in the area at $21,067 per student yet achieves only 18.4% math proficiency.

What truly sets this school apart is its success across all student groups. Special education students rank in the 98th–99th percentile statewide, Hispanic students reached the 99th percentile, and low-income students jumped from the 56th to the 97th percentile in a single year. All of this comes at a per-pupil cost of $15,627 — lower than several lower-performing schools nearby. The one soft spot is 8th grade math at 50.6% proficiency, though that still exceeds district and state averages. Overall, Signal Mountain competes closely with specialized schools like Chattanooga High School Center for Creative Arts and STEM School Chattanooga while serving a much larger, comprehensive student body.
