Millington Central Middle High School

Millington Central Middle High School serves about 1,193 students in grades 7–12 in Millington, Tennessee, and is part of the Millington Municipal Schools district, which ranks 119th of 141 districts statewide with a 1-star rating. The school sits in a competitive and economically diverse area, where top-performing schools like Lakeland Preparatory School, Munford High School, and Bartlett High School sit within 10 miles, alongside lower-performing Memphis-Shelby County Schools campuses. Millington's academic profile places it in the lower-middle tier of this local landscape, with proficiency rates well below state averages in math (18.7% vs. 43.0%), ELA (19.3% vs. 40.6%), science (29.9% vs. 46.9%), and social studies (39.3% vs. 51.4%).

Where Millington genuinely stands out is in keeping students engaged and in school. The graduation rate has climbed from 85.1% in 2022–2023 to 92.2% in 2024–2025, above the state average of 90.5%, while the dropout rate has fallen from 12.2% to 5.5%. Chronic absenteeism has dropped from 26.8% to 15.5% — better than the state average and far better than nearby Memphis Rise Academy (19.6%), Bolton High School (26.6%), Raleigh-Egypt High School (41.4%), or Craigmont High School (59.1%). In these measures, Millington resembles stable suburban schools like Munford High School (93.6% graduation) and Bartlett High School (94.8%) more than its struggling neighbors.

Academic test scores remain the biggest challenge. Math proficiency has stayed flat over three years, and most subject tests lag state averages. But there are bright spots: 8th graders taking Algebra I and 10th graders taking Algebra II perform near or above state averages, and the school reports solid results for military-connected students, reflecting its proximity to Naval Support Activity Mid-South. At $13,479 per student, Millington spends more than Munford ($10,078) or Bartlett ($12,218), suggesting the issue may be instructional effectiveness rather than funding. Millington is a school in transition — real progress in culture and completion, but raising academic achievement for all students remains the next step.
