Roane County Schools operates five middle schools serving grades 6–8 in a Tennessee district ranked 64th out of 141 districts statewide, with a total enrollment of 1,416 students. The strongest schools are Cherokee Middle School and Midway Middle School, both rated 4 stars and landing in the 86th–87th percentile of all Tennessee middle schools. Cherokee leads the district in every subject, posting math proficiency of 56.6%, ELA of 45.6%, science of 63.0%, and social studies of 67.1% — all well above state averages. It also boasts an extraordinary 92.3% proficiency rate in Algebra I, far exceeding the district's 22.6% and the state's 29.4%. Midway is nearly as strong, with math at 54.7% and the highest ELA rate among the five schools at 50.0% the previous year, while keeping chronic absenteeism low at 11.4%.

Harriman Middle School sits in the middle of the pack with a 3-star rating, but it is improving — jumping from 289th to 246th in state rankings, with social studies proficiency surging by 11.1 points. Rockwood Middle School also made big gains, climbing 81 spots to 331st after posting double-digit improvements in ELA and social studies. The biggest concern is Oliver Springs Middle School, the only school whose ranking dropped (to 355th). It has the lowest math proficiency in the district at 29.1%, and its 8th-grade math proficiency of just 16.9% means fewer than 1 in 6 students is proficient.

A notable pattern is that spending per pupil does not predict success. Oliver Springs spends the most at $16,872, yet has the lowest math and ELA scores, while Cherokee spends the least at $12,252 and performs the best. Chronic absenteeism also fails to tell the whole story: Oliver Springs has the lowest absenteeism (9.9%) but the weakest academics, while Harriman has the highest (20.2%) and only mid-level scores. Across all five schools, proficiency tends to drop sharply by 8th grade — especially in ELA, where the average falls from 46.3% in 6th grade to 29.1% in 8th grade. For parents, the clearest takeaway is that Cherokee and Midway are reliable high performers, Harriman and Rockwood are trending upward, and Oliver Springs needs the most attention, particularly in math.
