Summary

Arcadia Elementary is a K-5 public school in Spartanburg, SC, serving approximately 400 students as part of Spartanburg 06.

Arcadia Elementary faces significant challenges, with academic performance consistently ranking in the bottom 15% of South Carolina elementary schools over the past decade. In the most recent school year, the school earned a 1-star rating, ranking 558th out of 649 schools statewide. Proficiency rates in both English Language Arts and Math are well below state averages across all grade levels, and the gap widens as students progress—5th grade ELA proficiency sits at 30.3% compared to the state average of 63.6%, while 5th grade math is at 24.2% versus 49.1% statewide. The school serves a high-poverty population, with 100% of students qualifying for free/reduced lunch, and chronic absenteeism has more than tripled in two years, jumping from 8.4% to 24.3%. This attendance crisis likely contributes to the academic struggles, as students missing critical instructional time fall further behind.

Despite these challenges, there are some bright spots. English Language Learner students perform relatively well, ranking in the 35th percentile statewide—notably better than the school's overall performance—suggesting effective ELL support programs. The school also invests heavily in its students, spending $16,621 per student (higher than nearby West View Elementary at $12,854 and Lone Oak Elementary at $15,489) and maintaining a favorable 12.5:1 student-teacher ratio. However, this investment hasn't translated into outcomes. Nearby schools in the same district, like Lone Oak Elementary (37th percentile) and Woodland Heights Elementary (31st percentile), outperform Arcadia in nearly every subject. The starkest contrast is with Meeting Street Academy-Spartanburg, a charter school serving a similar demographic that ranks in the 85th percentile with 3rd grade ELA proficiency at 87.8% and math at 95.1%. Arcadia's test scores also show significant year-to-year volatility, making it difficult to assess the true effectiveness of instructional programs. To improve, the school will need to address attendance issues head-on and examine what higher-performing schools serving similar populations are doing differently.

Open Quote Arcadia is a great school that is family oriented. The faculty and staff a true heart for the students that attend the school and go out of their way to help in any way. Arcadia has overcome many obstacles and met AYP for the last few years, even though the state keeps raising the bar to ridiculous heights that no one thought they would make it.
