Spartanburg Preparatory School has seen fluctuations in its statewide ranking, ranging from a high of 56th out of 638 South Carolina elementary schools in 2014-2015 (5-star rating) to a low of 501st out of 638 in 2023-2024 (1-star rating). Spartanburg Preparatory School's test scores in English Language Arts and Mathematics have been mixed compared to the district and state averages, with the school seeing some strong performance in certain grade levels and subjects, but also significant challenges, particularly in Mathematics. Additionally, the school has consistently had high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.3% to 29.5% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. While the school has seen an increase in per-student spending, from $8,688 in 2018-2019 to $14,495 in 2023-2024, this has not necessarily translated to improved academic performance, suggesting the need for more targeted, evidence-based strategies to address the school's challenges.

Open Quote Just read the review about testing every child before the child is admitted to the school. The review also stated that because of this, the school is selecting who will and will not be admitted.

While Spartanburg Prep does test the student, the test is used to determine grade placement. All students are admitted to Spartanburg Prep- ALL. Close Quote

Open Quote Best school in Spartanburg County. Low teacher to student ratios and high parent engagement make this school a consistent top performer in the state!! Close Quote

Open Quote It is a charter public school, but you gain a spot via lottery. Prior to entrance your child will be tested and enrollment will depend on the results. Thus, the school unnaturally raises its rating by selecting the best of the best. Also, during the school year lesser students may be forced out. The school does not like underachieving students and tries to get rid of them as quickly as possible so that it's rating doesn't suffer. In addition, the school does not have “Horizon” and AP Honors classes. The level of teaching is not better than other public schools. Close Quote
