Summary

Catawba Trail Elementary in Elgin, SC, serves 636 students from Pre-K through 5th grade and is part of the Richland 02 school district, earning a 4-star rating and ranking in the 70th percentile statewide for the 2025-2026 school year.

This school stands out for its consistently strong academic performance, exceeding both district and state proficiency rates in every subject and grade level. In 5th grade math, for example, 59.4% of Catawba Trail students are proficient, compared to just 33.6% at nearby Rice Creek Elementary, 30.1% at Killian Elementary, and 35.4% at North Springs Elementary. The school also achieves these results efficiently, spending $14,516 per student—less than several neighboring schools that perform worse, such as Bookman Road Elementary ($19,019) and Lake Carolina Elementary Lower Campus ($17,870). With a favorable student-teacher ratio of 12.7:1 and a chronic absenteeism rate of just 13.3% (compared to 22.3% statewide), Catawba Trail creates a stable, supportive learning environment.

One of the school's most notable strengths is its exceptional support for students from all backgrounds. Students from low socioeconomic backgrounds rank in the 68th percentile statewide, and the school has maintained 4-star ratings in six of the past ten years, never falling below the 52nd percentile. While the school performs well overall, there is a growing gender gap—female students rank in the 77th percentile while male students rank in the 60th percentile—and English Language Learner support could be strengthened. Still, for families in the Elgin area, Catawba Trail Elementary is a clear standout, outperforming every nearby elementary school in the district by a significant margin.

Open Quote In the last 3 years, I have watched the administration and the faculty go through consistent transitioning. The heartfelt care, compassion, and sense of collaboration between the teachers, students, and parents has not been demonstrated ever since Ms. Barth left nearly 2 years ago. Truly hope things turn around in 2020. Close Quote
