Summit Parkway Middle in Columbia, SC, is a large K-8 school in the Richland 02 district, serving 1,229 students across both elementary and middle grades in a single building.

The most striking thing about Summit Parkway is the dramatic difference between its elementary and middle school performance. In grades K-5, the school is exceptional—4th grade reading proficiency hits 90% (compared to the 65% state average) and 5th grade math reaches 81%, outpacing every nearby elementary school by significant margins. However, once students move into 6th grade, scores drop sharply. By 7th grade, only 21.8% of students are proficient in math, a staggering 59-point drop from the school's own 5th grade math scores. This "transition cliff" has been consistent for several years, suggesting the middle school curriculum isn't building effectively on the strong elementary foundation. Interestingly, the school's advanced math track is outstanding—students taking Algebra 1 have scored 100% proficient on the end-of-course exam for three straight years, far above the state average of 74%.

Our daughter has one good teacher. The rest are terrible. The worst one sometimes brings her infant to school and makes her math class sit in the dark in complete silence during class so as not to disturb the baby. Close Quote

The teachers don't have control in the classrooms over noisy and disrespectful students which makes it hard for the respectful students to hear and focus. The teachers don't keep up with the grades online very well so you don't really know how your student is doing until the report card comes out. The magnet program and the teacher who runs it is good.
