Summary

Kelly Mill Middle in Blythewood, SC, is a unique school serving 979 students in grades 2 through 8 within the Richland 02 school district. This broader grade span sets it apart from most nearby middle schools, which typically serve only grades 6-8.

Kelly Mill shows a fascinating mix of strengths and challenges. The school's elementary grades (4th and 5th) perform exceptionally well, with 4th graders achieving 69.5% proficiency in both ELA and math—well above district and state averages. However, there's a dramatic "middle school cliff" as students advance: 6th grade math proficiency drops to 29.9%, and by 8th grade, only 22.7% of students are proficient in math, compared to 44.2% statewide. This pattern suggests the school excels at early education but struggles to maintain momentum in later grades. Interestingly, the school's Algebra 1 results are outstanding at 90.32% proficiency, far exceeding state averages—a "barbell effect" where top students thrive while many others struggle with grade-level math. The school also stands out for its remarkably low chronic absenteeism rate of 15.4%, well below the state average of 22.3%, indicating strong family engagement.

When compared to nearby schools, Kelly Mill's overall performance is middling. Blythewood Middle, just 2.5 miles away, dramatically outperforms Kelly Mill with an 82nd percentile ranking and nearly double the math proficiency rates. Lugoff-Elgin Middle in the Kershaw 01 district also significantly outperforms Kelly Mill. However, Longleaf Middle performs similarly overall. The school's overall state ranking has declined from the 63rd percentile in 2021-2022 to the 40th percentile in 2025-2026. While the school demonstrates strong results with specific student groups and maintains a favorable 13.6 student-teacher ratio, the persistent math struggles in upper grades and the significant gap compared to nearby Blythewood Middle suggest instructional challenges that the school's leadership will need to address to reverse the downward trend.

Open Quote worst school my son ever attended. Teachers and staff are not willing to lend a hand to help students. Bullying is a huge problem. Administration tells you they are concerned yet do nothing to help and after 2 weeks of waiting you talk to them again with no knowlege of what is going on with the issue. Teachers are rude and talk to parent with lack of respect. INC program is excellent with lots of great teachers. Only good teacher outside of INC was the spanish teacher Mrs Cruz (I believe that is her name). Close Quote
