Summary

Hyatt Park Elementary is a PK-5 school in Columbia, SC, serving 317 students within the Richland 01 school district, where 100% of students receive free or reduced lunch.

Hyatt Park has historically ranked in the bottom 5% of elementary schools statewide, but the most recent data shows a promising upward trend. The school jumped from the 5th to the 12th percentile in state ranking, moving up 39 spots in a single year—a more dramatic improvement than nearby schools like Edward E. Taylor Elementary, which dropped over 100 spots, or Burton Pack Elementary, which improved from a much lower base. One standout strength is the school's performance with African American students, ranking in the 35th percentile with a 2-star rating—a substantial jump from the 8th percentile just two years prior. Additionally, chronic absenteeism at Hyatt Park is just 16.9%, significantly better than the district average of 26.7% and far lower than neighbors like Burton Pack (52.3%) and Watkins-Nance Elementary (40.4%).

The most exciting news comes from 3rd grade. Math proficiency skyrocketed from 7.3% in 2023-2024 to 52% in 2025-2026, now exceeding the district average of 48.3%. ELA proficiency in 3rd grade (56%) nearly matches the district average (56.2%). However, the school faces a challenge: proficiency declines sharply in upper grades. By 5th grade, ELA drops to 36% and math to just 16%. The school spends generously—$29,885 per student—among the highest in its cluster, rivaling Carver-Lyon Elementary and Logan Elementary. While Logan Elementary stands out as a high-performing neighbor with a 3-star rating, Hyatt Park's recent gains suggest effective strategies are taking root, particularly in early grades. The key question is whether the school can replicate its 3rd-grade success across all grade levels.

Open Quote To say the staff at this school is good , is truly an under statement. The Principal Mrs Eason and the Ast. Principal Mrs Copper know almost all the children by name. The Staff goes beyond the call of duty. (most of the after school programs are ran by the teachers). Most schools are finding any little reason to suspend the children, but this team works to keep the children in school. The staff is pretty much steady, there is not a big turn over rate, and always a familiar friendly face . I have three children to attend this school and I promise you they will finish their elementry years at Hyatt Park (How about that Cougar Roar!!!!!!) yours truly Ms Stroy Close Quote
