Summary

Pinehurst Elementary is a public school in North Charleston, SC, serving 758 students in grades 1-5 as part of the Charleston 01 school district.

Pinehurst faces significant academic challenges, ranking in the bottom 5% of South Carolina elementary schools. In the most recent school year, only about 28-39% of students met state standards in English Language Arts, and math proficiency ranged from 29-40% across grade levels. These numbers are roughly 30-40 percentage points below district averages. The school serves a student population where 100% qualify for free or reduced lunch, and about 26% of students are chronically absent. On a positive note, Pinehurst shows relative strength in 3rd grade math, with 40% proficiency—its highest rate in any subject—and has shown gradual improvement in 5th grade reading, jumping to 38.7% proficiency. The school also performs relatively better for English Language Learner students, who rank in the 24th percentile statewide.

One of the most striking findings is the disconnect between spending and outcomes. Pinehurst spends $20,017 per student—nearly 60% more than Howe Hall AIMS Elementary in the neighboring Berkeley 01 district—yet Howe Hall ranks in the 98th percentile statewide while Pinehurst sits in the 4th. Similarly, Bowen's Corner Elementary spends 38% less per student yet achieves proficiency rates 40-50 points higher. Pinehurst does maintain a favorable student-teacher ratio of 11.4:1, better than nearby Hanahan Elementary (16.1:1). Within its own district, Pinehurst outperforms Pepperhill Elementary and A. C. Corcoran Elementary, but the persistent achievement gap compared to nearby schools in other districts suggests that additional funding alone isn't translating into better outcomes—the effectiveness of instructional strategies and leadership may be more critical factors.

Open Quote I rated this school as Excellent because North Charleston has a bad reputa2011tion when it comes to civil peace and education. For Pinehurst to maintain the consistent rating of Average while growing in size according to it's diverse school-wide demographics from 2011 to present, they are doing a phenomental job withing the realm of education within the Charleston community. Praise needs to be given where praise is due. Therefore, I have rated Pinehurst Elementary with 5 stars for being consistent and constantly making continuous improvements with your students, staff, and community partners so that the 21st century leaders within their care will be able to compete and succeed...today, tomorrow, and beyond. Keep up the Excellent work Pinehurst Elementary! Smile and Shine Always, The C.A.T Close Quote
