Summary

Pinehurst Elementary is a public elementary school in North Charleston, South Carolina, serving 690 students in grades 1-5. The school is part of the Charleston 01 School District, which is ranked 23 out of 75 districts in the state and has a 4-star rating.

Pinehurst Elementary has consistently ranked in the bottom 10% of South Carolina elementary schools, with significantly below-average performance on state assessments across all grade levels and subject areas. For example, in 2024-2025, only 29.3% of 3rd-grade students at Pinehurst were proficient or better in English Language Arts, compared to 64.5% in the district and 61.8% statewide. The school also has high chronic absenteeism rates, ranging from 21.5% to 25.0% over the past few years, which is significantly higher than the state average. Additionally, Pinehurst Elementary has a 100% free and reduced-price lunch rate, indicating that all students come from low-income households.

While Pinehurst Elementary has seen a significant increase in per-student spending and improved student-teacher ratios, these changes have not yet translated into meaningful improvements in student outcomes. Interestingly, some nearby schools in the Berkeley 01 district, such as Howe Hall AIMS Elementary and Bowen's Corner Elementary, demonstrate significantly higher academic performance, suggesting that factors beyond just district-level resources may be contributing to Pinehurst Elementary's struggles.

Open Quote I rated this school as Excellent because North Charleston has a bad reputa2011tion when it comes to civil peace and education. For Pinehurst to maintain the consistent rating of Average while growing in size according to it's diverse school-wide demographics from 2011 to present, they are doing a phenomental job withing the realm of education within the Charleston community. Praise needs to be given where praise is due. Therefore, I have rated Pinehurst Elementary with 5 stars for being consistent and constantly making continuous improvements with your students, staff, and community partners so that the 21st century leaders within their care will be able to compete and succeed...today, tomorrow, and beyond. Keep up the Excellent work Pinehurst Elementary! Smile and Shine Always, The C.A.T Close Quote
